My Teaching Philosophy is set in the ideology that all students deserve the space to create freely. I believe the Art classroom can provide students with a space to not only build on technical skills, but also, allow students to explore their passions and interests in a personal and meaningful way. Through creating Units of Learning which facilitate both improving on and building new skill sets as well as creative freedom and room for personal expression, my classroom accurately reflects the students which are in it at any given time.
Process, failure and success
My PME research studies focused on how the implementation of a positive classroom culture can impact students artistic skill as well as confidence in their work. This research stems from my core teaching beliefs that students can work with and embrace failure instead of avoiding it entirely. I believe that when classrooms change from pressured, rigid environments towards more experimental spaces which encourage mistakes, it allows for a healthier and more productive classroom, centred around student well being. As well as this, I centre my teaching around the ideologies of constructivism and growth mindset, providing students with aid when appropriate, whilst also encouraging them to face challenges and build their own confidence and skills.
Diversity in the classroom
My classroom strongly values student voice and agency grounded in consistent, open group discussions and cultivating a space in which all students feel their voice is heard. By creating a space where students feel understood and catered for by accounting for their unique differences, all students can co-exist and share their own valuable and differing experiences, cultivating a diverse and equal classroom. These values are reflected in my classroom through personalised maskmaking and painting projects centred around student interests and personalities.
Looking at Art
My units of Learning take inspiration from my own personal Art practice as well as contemporary Art exploring key issues in today's society. Through rich engagement with Artist research, I believe students can find their artistic voice and explore their own passions. My teaching prioritises the idea that Art expands beyond one form, and encourages students to explore a wide variety of contemporary Art, music, literature and history as a way to unlock inspiration.
At its core, my teaching philosophy rests on the idea that each individual student has something valuable to contribute to the classroom as a whole. My classroom provides a culture in which very student should feel empowered, valued and able to enjoy creating, discussing, improving on and experiencing Art to the fullest extent.
